The retroviral meds used to treat HIV can also prevent the transmission of HIV from one person to another: so the more people you effectively treat, the more people you save from being infected. The situations where these meds can help include:

  • Prevention of mother-to-baby transmission during childbirth
  • Preventing babies from getting HIV through their mothers milk
  • In PEP or post-exposure prophylaxis
